The main characters, classified by power and influence
Based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, The devil wears Prada is considered a landmark of pop culture. Her story revolves around Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine called Runway, and her two overworked assistants, Emily Charlton from Emily Blunt and Andrea Sachs from Anne Hathaway.
While Emily, who has worked for Miranda for a while, knows the ins and outs of the fashion industry, Andrea is not keen on working there. That is of course until she becomes one of the powerful people who roam the halls of Runway. From Irv Ravitz, CEO of Elias-Clark to Andrea herself, The devil wears Prada is all about a tight-knit group of people with immense social capital.
ten Nate cooper
Andrea’s boyfriend Nate is seen as a weak person and constantly holds her back. He’s not only threatened by his go-getter girlfriend, but he has a tendency to pass judgment on an industry he knows nothing about. While Nate, a chef by profession, works extremely hard to make the life of his dreams come true, he wants his girlfriend to do what he thinks is practical for the relationship.
Like her, he begins his professional career, and therefore has the least authority and influence. Andrea constantly walks on eggshells around him, he shows his least compassion and opinions, neither here nor there. A person so insecure is at the bottom The devil wears Prada ladder.
Doug might not be trendy, but he does know a thing or two about respecting what other people do for a living. A business research analyst, he always wears sharp suits for work and says right off the bat that he already has the job of his dreams.
Doug is the first of Andrea’s friends to remind her that Miranda Priestly is big business and that a million girls would kill for her job. He’s Andrea’s contemporary and because he’s worked steadily for a while he’s a cut above Nate.
8 Andrea Sachs
Although Anne Hathaway’s Andrea was for a time Miranda Priestly’s main assistant, she quit her job and returned to what she originally intended to do – hard news. While working for Miranda, Andrea was able to obtain the Harry potter manuscript for her twins.
She also coped well with the stress of working under high level executives while maintaining her performance at work. Clever, sensible and a go-getter, there’s no doubt that Andrea will excel wherever she goes, once she shows the ropes, of course.
7 Emily charlton
Miranda’s main assistant, Emily Charlton knows what it means to work hard. She knows all the tricks of the trade and, as a senior, teaches Andrea from the very start of the film. Emily worships Miranda and is grateful for what she has.
The fact that Miranda refers to Andrea as Emily is a telling example of how important her first assistant really is. Emily Charlton is Miranda’s guardian and therefore a very important person in their professional and social circles.
6 Jacqueline Follet
Jacqueline Follet may not have replaced Miranda Priestly as the new editor-in-chief of American Runway, but she has become the president of James Holt International. By landing a prestigious and well-paying position, she was able to take the lead and therefore was a powerful woman.
Jacqueline was first introduced as the editor-in-chief of French Runway, and someone who is pleasant to work with. This is one of the reasons Elias-Clark chairman Irv Ravitz considered her for the important post at American Runway.
5 James holt
To have a powerful icon like Miranda Priestly singing the praises of James has to mean that the man is exceptional. Led by Miranda herself, the who’s who of the fashion industry gathered in Paris to celebrate the newly solidified partnership of Massimo Corteleoni and designer James Holt.
She had worked with James for years and before she could introduce Company President Jameses, she praised his strong work ethic and accomplishments. The truth is, James became a big deal the moment he was joined in his international business by the big guy, Massimo Corteleoni.
4 Christian thompson
Christian Thompson is a reputable writer, as Andrea admired his work for years, and Jacqueline originally intended to hire him to direct the editorial content for American Runway. While at Northwestern, Andrea reviewed Christian’s collection of essays for his college journal, the Daily Northwestern.
When Miranda asks Andrea to go get the next unreleased Harry potter manuscript for his twins, Christian is the one who exerts his influence to obtain it from a friend of a friend in charge of the cover.
Nigel is Miranda Priestly’s close assistant and the person she trusts to help and support her at work. He, as Miranda points out, is sometimes the only one who has a valuable contribution. Nigel was originally the person Miranda recommended for a more senior position at James Holt International.
For Nigel, Runway is more than just a magazine; it’s a beacon of hope for budding fashion artists around the world. For his passion and long-standing commitment to his profession, Nigel is a name well respected in social circles.
2 Irv Ravitz
Andrea is first introduced to Elias-Clark President Irv Ravitz by Nigel in an elevator. From their very first conversation itself, it’s evident that Irv is a person of tremendous wealth and power.
When Nigel confirms that Miranda did kill the story of the $ 300,000 fall jackets and quit filming Sedona, Irv casually remarks, “that must have been ugly jackets.” It would be one of the few times in the film where Andrea stands still, totally struck by the aura of power that surrounds her. Once Irv gets out of the elevator, the words “huge ego” come out of Nigel’s mouth.
1 Miranda Priestly
Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly is the most influential person in the fashion industry. Her closest assistant, Emily Charlton describes her as a “legend”. Throughout the film, Andrea, who thinks she has lowered her standards to work at Runway, struggles to keep up with her boss’s pace of life. Miranda is the most powerful person in any room she walks into and she knows the who’s who of media, entertainment and fashion.
She’s a human encyclopedia, a storehouse of knowledge, and Andrea is constantly reminded of how privileged she is to work under Miranda. When superiors consider replacing her with Jacqueline Follet, Miranda threatens to take with her the talent she has cultivated over the years. “The truth is, no one can do what I do,” says the most influential and feared character in The devil wears Prada.
