Odisha CM publishes “Encyclopedia of Tribes in Odisha” at the State Tribal Museum

Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, today released 5 edited volumes of the “Encyclopedia of the Tribes of Odisha” published by the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Research and Training Institute and the Odisha State Tribal Museum in the museum complex. Odisha is the only state so far to publish an encyclopedia of all tribes.

Expressing his joy for such an amazing and unique publication, he said that this book will definitely be a great treasure and repository for all scholars, researchers, policy makers and those who want to know about the tribal communities in the state, and also commended the work of the Institute.

The five edited volumes contain 3,800 pages and 418 research papers covering the 62 Scheduled Tribal Communities and 13 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

The Encyclopedia’s 418 articles have been published in the Adivasi journal and other publications over the past six decades. This gigantic painstaking and commendable work of editing, compilation and republication has been carried out over the past 4 years by Professor AB Ota, Director of SCSTRTI and his consultant SC Mohanty.

The CM also toured the museum galleries and enjoyed the newly added map projection unit at the PVTG museum.

Among others, ST & SC Development Minister Jagannath Saraka, CMO Senior Advisor Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary Saswat Mishra and SCSTRTI & Odisha State Tribal Museum Director, Prof. ABOta were also present on the occasion.

In particular, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the Tribal Museum in 2001, and the second Museum in 2009, which is exclusively devoted to PVTG. The museum was granted the status of Odisha State Tribal Museum in 2018 by the Chief Minister.
