Nigeria: Shepherds’ crisis – Ortom asks Nigerians for help for internally displaced people in Benue
Makurdi – Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State called on Nigerians for help in view of the worsening humanitarian crisis in the state caused by the Benue’s stay of more than five years in people’s camps internally displaced persons, IDP.
He said the humanitarian crisis had strained state resources and called for the intervention of individuals, governments, business organizations and goodwill civil society groups to help. the government to meet the needs of the displaced.
The governor made this appeal on Sunday during separate thanksgiving masses held at the Saint-Dominique Catholic Church in Sachi and the Saint-Joseph de Nyon Quasi-Parish in Makurdi to respectively mark the birthday of the president of the Benue Assembly, Mr. Titus Uba, and former Wanteregh statesman Paul Unongo.
Governor Ortom acknowledged the support of the Church, in particular the Bishop of the Diocese of Makurdi, Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe, the Governors of Rivers, Taraba and Akwa Ibom States, donors and faith-based organizations as well as individuals to the fate of over 1.6 million internally displaced people.
The governor also called on Nigerians to continue praying for President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of the country to enable them to provide leadership that would engender peace and unity in the country.
While describing the president as a humble figure under whose leadership the State Assembly had enacted people-centered laws, the governor described Paul Unongo as an “encyclopedia” of Nigerian politics under whose tutelage he learned a number of things about leadership.
Governor Ortom ordered his works and transport commissioner to immediately ensure the opening of an access road to the St. Dominic Ayu School of Science with the commitment to also ensure that the center of cult area has good parking.
The celebrants expressed their gratitude to God for adding a year to their years, while also thanking the governor and other guests for identifying with them on this auspicious occasion.
