New online encyclopedia sheds light on Center County history and culture
CENTER COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – Whether you’re looking to learn more about the Grange Encampment Fair, Penn State University football, the Bellefonte Central Railroad, or anything in between, the history of Center County is now available in a click.
a online encyclopedia of history and culture contains scholarly entries on the people, places and events of the region.
“There has been no written history of Center County for 100 years,” said Lee Stout, co-editor of the Center County History and Culture Encyclopedia.
About 40 volunteers worked together for 18 months to create the encyclopedia.
“From the start we wanted it to be a real community effort, we didn’t want it to be just the product of a few people, we wanted to invite authors, photographers and people from all over the county to participate,” said Ford Risley. , co-editor of the Center County Encyclopedia of History & Culture. “This is one of the things that I think we are really proud of”
“We have a number of people working on the review, we have university interns and a number of people helping out, reading articles and just making suggestions and contributions, so it’s a wide range of people,” said Stout.
The editors said the database includes easy-to-read articles and that they encourage community members to delve into the free resource.
“We really believe you have to know the history of where you live and this central county really has a rich history stretching back over 200 years,” Risley said.
The resource is sponsored by the Center County Historical Society and the website was created with a grant from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau.
It is an evolving encyclopedia which the editors say will be updated regularly.
“This is a project that will continue into the indefinite future, as long as people make contributions and watch it grow, we will continue to expand the encyclopedia,” Stout said.
