Clymer / Sherman dethrone Panama in class D | News, Sports, Jobs
PANAMA – Clymer and Sherman merged their softball programs this spring.
It turned out to be exactly what was needed.
Janelle Burchanowski also performed very well.
The eighth-grader, who started the season in junior college, scored a single, double and treble, had two runs, scored four times and stole three goals to send Clymer / Sherman to a victory of 7-6 on Panama in the class of section VI. Championship D game at Deb Palmer Field Thursday.
“This is something we talked about at the start of the year”, Clymer / Sherman coach Frank Lewczyk said he won the section crown in the first year as a combined team. “It was our goal, but the feeling of bringing two schools together and bringing these kids together is the best feeling. There is nothing like it.
There is no better than Burchanowski either.
The third baseman doubled in the first inning; reached on an error in the third inning; hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning; and hit a single and scored what turned out to be the winning run early in the sixth inning on an Amaya Lewczyk sacrifice ball.
Too bad for the nervousness of the playoffs.
“She came (from the jayvees) and she works and works and works, and you saw what it was today”, Coach Lewczyk said. “Everything I asked her, she never flinched. She arrived on day one and has been there since game two of the season. She is getting better and better.
Clymer / Sherman opened the scoring early in the first inning when Burchanowski scored a brace down the left and scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers responded right away as Sarah Harvey doubled up on one putout, moved up to third on one out and scored when her sister Ashlyn hit a homerun over the left field fence.
Panama, who scored four unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings, only had two hits the rest of the game. Clymer / Sherman starter Samantha Henning worked the first five innings of the circle and Amaya Lewczyk closed the game, allowing a hit and strikeout four. Kaitlyn Lindsey also had three hits for the winners, including a double, and scored a run in their fourth four-run inning.
Madelyn Lisciandro had a single bunt in the second inning and Mandy Brink had a single in the sixth for Panama’s other two hits.
“Offensively, we suffered intermittently. Panama coach Tammy Hosier said. ”… But I am proud of my team. They stayed focused. We were close.
Coach Lewczyk said playing in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association’s Division 2 West has paid dividends for his team.
“It made us better and made us realize that we could hang out with anyone”, he said. ”… It’s been a good year, it’s been a fun year and they all get along. … This is what we wanted to do. We have laid a fairly decent foundation for the years to come.
Remember, Burchanowski has four additional college seasons.
“She has a bright future, that’s for sure” said Bonneterie.
NOTES: Panama won the 2019 Section VI Class D title, one of six the Panthers have claimed since 1976.… Clymer and Sherman have never claimed a stand-alone sectional crown, according to the section’s website VI.
