Britney Spears musical premiere set for Washington, DC
The long-awaited world premiere of Britney Spears’ song-steeped musical “Once Upon a One More Time” arrives on November 29. But it will not be in Chicago as previously announced.
The Boadway-bound musical directed and choreographed by Drama Desk nominee artists Keone and Mari Madrid, was set to debut at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theater last April when production plans were derailed due to the pandemic shutdown virus from all theaters and entertainment venues. The show will now premiere in a Shakespeare Theater Company production in Washington, DC
It is not known if the previously announced casting of Briga Heelan (“Great News”) as Cinderella, Justin Guarini (“American Idol”) as Prince Charming, Emily Skinner (“The Cher Show”) and Simon Callow (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”) are confirmed for DC production.
The story of the show centers around a book club bringing together Cinderella, Snow White, The Little Mermaid and other classic tale characters whose worlds are turned upside down when a “rogue fairy godmother” gives them a copy of “The feminine mystique” to discuss.
“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on that I love and adore,” Spears said in a 2019 release when the show was announced.
Ironically, the musical Spears was originally intended to replace a Michael Jackson musical that was set for its 2019 world premiere in Chicago. Plans for this production, which had been tentatively titled “Don’t Stop Until You Have Enough,” never fully materialized. The musical ‘MJ’ is now set to debut in December 2022 on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theater.
