Avon to Elyria

What: Southwestern Conference game

When: 7 p.m., Sept. 17

Where: Mercy Health Field at Ely Stadium

Records: Avon 2-2, Elyria 3-1

Last year: DNP

For the record: Elyria’s opening salvo in the SWC did not go as planned as the Pioneers fell against Berea-Midpark in week 4. The Pioneer defense ended an explosive attack from Berea -Midpark but didn’t have much in attack. This has been a common theme so far for the first four weeks of the year. In Week 1, it took almost three full quarters for the Pioneers’ offense to pull off a big game. When they did, it threw them to a win. The same thing happened in week three against Lorain. It wasn’t until Andrew Palos scored on a long touchdown pass that the Pioneers began to take over. … Avon comes in at 2-2 for the first time in over a decade. The Eagles abandoned their Week 4 game in what was a surprisingly unbalanced loss – until the fourth quarter – to Avon Lake. Mike Elder’s squad are led by strong defense and one of the region’s most dynamic runners at Jakorion Caffey. In the loss to Avon Lake, Caffey ran for 115 yards and a score while catching two second-half touchdowns that got the Eagles back late in the game. … The game to watch here is Caffey against Elyria’s top seven. Isaiah Johnson is one of the best linebackers in the region amid Elyria’s defense, which means he and Caffey are expected to meet several times. If Elyria can find some big plays early on, it should be a very close game.
