Sometimes it is less important how you get from point A to point B because it is of the utmost importance that you get to point B.
At least, that’s how I feel about the Justin Fields experience at this point.
We all knew Fields’ day would come. It was only a matter of time. As a college quarterback, Fields was a star who displayed incredible talent in arms, athleticism and leadership skills. After being drafted with the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields has flaunted these skills throughout minicamps, training camp and preseason. But now, the time has come to put into practice everything he has learned on his way to begin with. There is no look over his shoulder. And don’t try to overdo it in an attempt to climb the depths table because a veteran is ahead of him. Now is Justin Fields time. Complete stop.
Fields doesn’t have to do everything today. And to be clear, he doesn’t have to do it on his own. So I hope his coaches and teammates will make him understand this point. But today is the first chapter of what will hopefully be a great book with a storybook ending. And Fields will be the author, as we would have liked in April.
